The IMD said Chennai is likely to receive light to moderate rainfall during the evening hours for next two days.
As per the weather office, cloudy skies will provide some relief from the soaring temperature.
Due to rainfall prediction, fishermen in the region have been asked to avoid venturing into the sea till June 18.
Apart from Chennai, extremely heavy rainfall has been predicted for Assam, Meghalaya, Sikkim, and West Bengal for 3-4 days.
IMD said monsoon will further spread to West Bengal, Maharashtra, Odisha, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh in a couple of days.
The weather office sad a cyclonic circulation has been identified over Assam and one more has been located over West Bengal.
Because of these weather conditions, extremely rainfall is expected in Meghalaya and Assam from June 17to June 20.
IMD said Arunachal Pradesh is also likely to get heavy rainfall for two days from June 17 to June 18.
Rainfall is also predicted for Bihar, Jharkhand and Odisha in the next two days.
Kerala is also predicted to have isolated heavy rainfall on June 17 and June 18.
IMD has also predicted a partly cloudy sky with possibility of rain and thunderstorms in Mumbai on Monday.
