New Delhi Railway Station stampede: 15 dead, including 3 children, 10 injured, confirms LNJP Hospital

New Delhi: At least 15 people were injured in a stampede like situation at the New Delhi Railway Station on Saturday, 15 February 2025. Four fire tenders have been rushed to the spot.

“This is situation of ‘overcrowding’ at New Delhi railway station as two trains towards Prayagraj got cancelled. Now adequate measures are in place,” says a quote from the Railway Ministry.

“There was a stampede, 15 people reported injured,” DCP Delhi Police was quoted as saying by Zee News.

Four women fainted due to severe overcrowding at the New Delhi Railway Station on Saturday night, said the officials adding that the incident occurred around 10 pm on platform numbers 13 and 14.

“There is no official confirmation of any casualties or injuries due to the incident,” Dilip Kumar, Railways PRO was quoted as saying by India Today TV.

Delhi Police and RPF are on the spot and helping in rescue, relief, and shifting the injured to the hospital.

“Special trains are being run to evacuate sudden rush,” said Himanshu Upadhyay, CPRO, Northern Railways.

The railways denied the reports of a stampede.

“There is no stampede at New Delhi Railway Station. It is only a rumour. Northern Railways was running two planned special trains for Prayagraj,” said Himanshu Upadhyay, CPRO, Northern Railways.

In an official statement, the deputy commissioner of police (railway) said many people were present on platform number 14 when the Prayagraj Express train was standing at the platform.

The officer further said the Swantrata Senani Express and Bhubaneshwar Rajdhani Express were delayed and the passengers of these trains were also present on platform numbers 12, 13 and 14.

“As per CMI, every hour 1,500 general tickets were sold by railways due to which the station got overcrowded and became uncontrollable. There was a stampede at platform no. 14 and near escalator near platform no. 16,” the DCP said.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said in a post on X that the situation at the station is now under control, Delhi Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel have reached the spot and the injured have been taken to hospitals. Special trains are being run to tackle the sudden rush.

The Ministry of Railways has ordered a probe into the incident.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh posted on X: Devastating news from New Delhi Railway Station. I am extremely pained by the loss of lives due to stampede on Railway platform. In this hour of grief, my thoughts are with the bereaved families. Praying for the speedy of the injured.
