Man Who Filmed, Shared Ujjain Rape Video Arrested; Cops Probe ‘Conspiracy’ Angle

A senior officer said they have also recovered the mobile phone which the accused used to film the Ujjain rape video, adding that it is also being investigated whether he shot the video as part of a "conspiracy".

Ujjain Rape: An auto driver who allegedly filmed a woman being raped on a busy footpath in Ujjain district in Madhya Pradesh was arrested by the police even as the cops are investigation whether the video was intentionally shot and circulated as part of a “conspiracy” to defame the state and its government.

According to the police, the accused, identified as Mohammad Salim, was arrested after the rape video was found on his phone. Salim, resident Prakash Nagar in Nagda area of Ujjain is an auto-driver by profession, they said.

A senior officer said they have also recovered the mobile phone which the accused used to film the Ujjain rape video, adding that it is also being investigated whether he shot the video as part of a “conspiracy”.

“We are trying to ascertain the intention behind deliberately making the video viral by the accused,” said Superintendent of Police Pradeep Sharma.

The SP further said that the information is being collected about the person with who Salim shared the video.

A case has been registered against the accused under sections 72, 77, 294 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), IT Act and Indecent Representation of Women Act, he added.

Woman raped on Ujjain road

In a shocking incident, a woman was raped in broad daylight on a busy footpath in Agar Naka area of Ujjain on Wednesday. As per the police, the woman, who works as a ragpicker to earn a living, was forced by the accused to consume alcohol on the pretext of marriage and then raped her.

The vile act was filmed by passersby who instead of stopping the assault, recorded it on their mobile phones and shared it on social media where it went viral.

Police took cognizance of the incident after the video went viral and arrested the accused, Lokesh, who had fled the spot after the incident.

“Accused Lokesh promised to marry her, made her drink liquor and then raped her on Wednesday. Some people who were passing by shot videos of the incident instead of stopping the crime. Lokesh later fled from the spot. After the woman filed a complaint when the effect of alcohol wore off, Lokesh was arrested,” said Kotwali Area’s City Superintendent of Police (CSP) Om Prakash Mishra.
