This byelection was necessitated following the resignation of Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh. Chouhan vacated the Budhni seat after being elected to the Lok Sabha from Vidisha in June 2024. Subsequently, he was appointed to the Union Cabinet as the Agriculture Minister, leaving Budhni without representation in the state Assembly.
