‘India stands united against terror’

Hailing the success of Operation Sindoor, Mukesh Ambani said the whole country was proud of the armed forces, and stands united against terrorism. “We are very proud of our Indian armed forces for Operation Sindoor. India is united, determined and firm in its purpose against all forms of terrorism,” he said.

Mukesh Ambani hails PM Modi’s leadership

The billionaire also hailed the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying that under his leadership the Indian Army has given a befitting response to terrorists and their sympathisers across the border.

“Under the leadership of PM Modi, the Indian Army has given a befitting reply to every action happening across the border. India will never remain silent in the face of terrorism. We will not tolerate a single attack on our soil, our citizens and the brave soldiers who protect our country. In the last few days, we have proved that every attempt to endanger our peace will be given a befitting reply,” said Mukesh Ambani.

Reliance ready to help in every possible way

Meanwhile, the industrialist also assured that his company, Reliance Industries– India’s most-valued domestic firm– will provide all possible help during the ongoing crisis, and to help protect the unity and integrity of the nation. “Together, we will stand, we will fight and we will win, Jai Hind, Jai Hind ki Sena,” the Reliance Industries chairman said.

Akash missile defence system: India’s shield in the sky https://www.india.com/news/india/akash-missile-defence-system-indias-shield-in-the-sky-7810290/ Fri, 09 May 2025 11:30:32 +0000 https://www.india.com/?p=7810290 India’s skies are safer than ever, thanks to the Akash Missile Defence System. Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), this homegrown system is like a strong shield protecting the nation from aerial dangers. In today’s world, where wars involve missiles, drones, and advanced technology, Akash is India’s answer to keeping its airspace secure. Fast, mobile, and accurate, this missile system strengthens India’s air defence like never before.

The name “Akash” means “sky” in Sanskrit, and it truly lives up to its name. It guards India’s skies by stopping threats like enemy fighter jets, drones, and cruise missiles. Deployed along borders and near important places like military bases, Akash gives the Indian Armed Forces the confidence to work without fear, even when enemies are watching.

How Does Akash Work?

The Akash system is a surface-to-air missile (SAM) platform, which means it shoots missiles from the ground to destroy targets in the air. It’s a smart system that can detect, track, and destroy threats before they cause harm. Here’s how it works in simple steps:

  • Detection: Akash uses a powerful radar, like the Rajendra 3D radar, to spot enemy aircraft or missiles up to 100 km away.
  • Tracking: Once it finds a target, the radar follows its every move, checking its speed, direction, and height.
  • Decision: A control unit decides if the target is dangerous and needs to be stopped.
  • Launch: If required, an Akash missile is fired straight up from a mobile launcher.
  • Guidance: The missile gets real-time directions from the ground radar to stay on course.
  • Destruction: When it gets close to the target, the missile explodes using a proximity fuse, destroying or damaging the enemy object. This process happens in seconds, making Akash quick and reliable.

Key Features of Akash

The Akash system is packed with features that make it a strong defender of India’s skies. Here are some highlights:

  • Range: It can hit targets 25–45 km away.
  • Altitude: It can take down threats flying as high as 18 km (about 60,000 feet).
  • Speed: The missile travels at Mach 2.5, which is 2.5 times the speed of sound.
  • Mobility: Mounted on trucks, Akash can move quickly to where it’s needed.
  • Targets: It can destroy fighter jets, cruise missiles, helicopters, and drones.
  • All-Weather: Akash works in rain, fog, or shine, day or night.

Why Akash Is Important for India

India faces many security challenges, from tense borders with neighbouring countries to the threat of terrorism and new aerial technologies like drones. For a long time, India depended on foreign systems to protect its skies. But Akash changes that. It’s a proudly Indian system, built under the “Make in India” mission, which means we can make it ourselves without relying on other countries.

  • Self-Reliance: Akash reduces India’s need for costly foreign missile systems. It’s affordable and can be produced in large numbers.
  • Strategic Protection: The system is deployed in key areas, like the northeast and western borders near Pakistan and China, guarding against surprise attacks.
  • Proven Success: Akash has been tested many times, including live trials where it successfully shot down targets. For example, in 2021, the Indian Air Force demonstrated its accuracy by intercepting high-speed aerial targets.

Operation Sindoor: Akash in Action

On the night of May 7–8, 2025, the Akash Missile Defence System proved its strength during Operation Sindoor, a response to Pakistan’s attack on 15 Indian military sites with drones and missiles. According to reports, the Indian Air Force used Akash, along with other systems like the S-400 and MRSAM, to neutralise the threats across 1,800 km of airspace, from Jammu to Bhuj. The Akash system successfully intercepted Pakistani drones and missiles, and even shot down a Pakistani F-16 fighter jet, with sources suggesting a JF-17 was also hit. Integrated with the IAF’s command system, Akash’s 45-km range and ability to engage multiple targets at once ensured no hostile assets breached Indian airspace, with debris found in Jammu, Punjab, and Gujarat. This real-world success highlighted Akash’s critical role in India’s defence.

Variants and Upgrades

The DRDO, along with Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), keeps improving Akash to make it even better. Two upgraded versions are:

  • Akash-1S: This version has better accuracy and a new seeker to track targets more effectively.
  • Akash-NG (New Generation): This advanced model has a lighter, two-pulse solid rocket motor and an active radar seeker. It’s faster, deadlier, and can reach up to 50–60 km, ready for modern warfare.

Fact-checking confirms that Akash-NG was successfully tested in January 2024, showing improved range and precision, making it a strong contender for future defence needs.

How Akash Compares to Other Systems

Akash fills an important gap in India’s air defence by handling mid-range threats. Here’s how it compares:

  • S-400 (Russia): A long-range SAM with a reach of up to 400 km. It’s imported and costly.
  • Akash (India): A medium-range SAM (25–45 km), fully made in India and budget-friendly.
  • Barak-8 (India-Israel): A medium- to long-rang 8e SAM (70–100 km), used by the Navy and Air Force.
  • QRSAM (India): A short-range, quick-reaction SAM for fast-moving targets.

Together, these systems create a layered defence network, protecting India from threats at different distances and heights. India received its first S-400 squadron in 2021, with more deliveries ongoing, complementing Akash’s role.

The Road Ahead

India isn’t just using Akash for itself—it’s also looking to sell it to other countries. Nations in Southeast Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, like Armenia and the Philippines, have shown interest. In 2023, Armenia signed a deal worth ₹6,000 crore for Akash systems, with deliveries expected by late 2024. With upgrades like Akash-NG, Indi 9a could become a major player in the global missile defence market.

A Symbol of India’s Strength

In a world where aerial threats are growing—drones, stealth jets, and cruise missiles—India cannot afford to be unprepared. The Akash Missile Defence System is more than just a weapon. It’s a symbol of India’s growing technological power, its push for self-reliance, and its commitment to keeping the nation safe. From the snowy peaks of Ladakh to the deserts of Rajasthan, Akash is India’s shield in the sky, protecting the dreams of 1.4 billion people.

India-Pakistan war: World Bank chief Ajay Banga’s BIG statement on Indus Water Treaty, says institution has no… https://www.india.com/news/india/india-pakistan-war-world-bank-chief-ajay-banga-big-statement-on-indus-water-treaty-says-institution-has-no-role-to-play-7809951/ Fri, 09 May 2025 10:47:12 +0000 https://www.india.com/?p=7809951 India-Pakistan war: Amidst heightened tensions that are on the cusp of boiling over into a major India-Pakistan war, World Bank President Ajay Banga Friday made a major statement on the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT), which was held in abeyance by India after last month’s barbaric Pahalgam terror attack.

World Bank merely a ‘facilitator’

Banga said the World Bank has “no role to play” in the Indus Water Treaty– which it brokered between India and Pakistan in 1960– beyond being a “facilitator”.

“We have no role to play beyond a facilitator. There’s a lot of speculation in the media about how the World Bank will step in and fix the problem but it’s all bunk. The World Bank’s role is merely as a facilitator,” an official release by the Press Information Bureau (PIB) quoted Ajay Banga as saying.

Notably, the India and Pakistan signed the Indus Waters Treaty was signed in 1960 after nine years of negotiations mediated by the World Bank, which is also a signatory to the agreement.

A day after the Pahalgam terror attack, where terrorists gunned down 26 civilians, mostly Indian Hindu tourists, in Kashmir, the Indian government kept the the Indus Water Treaty in abeyance with immediate effect, until Pakistan credibly and irrevocably abjures its support for cross-border terrorism.

Won’t step in to fix issues, says WB

The World Bank chief clarified that the global financial institution will not step in to the fix the suspension imposed on the water sharing agreement by India as its role in the treaty is limited to that of a “facilitator”.

Meanwhile, on Thursday evening, Ajay Banga met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi, leading to speculations that the World Bank might step in and interfere in the matter.

‘Pakistan repeatedly violated IWT’

In a press conference on Operation Sindoor on Thursday, India’s foreign secretary Vikram Misri accused Pakistan of repeatedly violating Indus Water Treaty by deliberately creating “legal roadblocks” over the years, adding that India “adhering to the treaty for the last 65 years”, but its patience was wearing out.

Misri said that India was constantly trying to negotiate with Pakistan to discuss modifications of the treaty.

“For the last 2.5 years, India has been in communication with the Government of Pakistan. We have sent several notices to them requesting negotiations to discuss the modification of the treaty. India has been honouring the treaty for more than six decades, even during the period when Pakistan imposed multiple wars on us. Pakistan has been the one acting in violation of the treaty, deliberately creating legal roadblocks in India, exercising its legitimate rights on the Western rivers… It is India’s patience that we were adhering to the treaty for the last 65 years, even after so many provocations,” he said.

The foreign secretary noted Pakistan’s constant “refusal to respond to our request” has been another factor to put the treaty in abeyance.

The Treaty allocates the Western Rivers (Indus, Jhelum, Chenab) to Pakistan and the Eastern Rivers (Ravi, Beas, Sutlej) to India. At the same time, the Treaty allows each country certain waters of the rivers allocated to the other. The treaty gives India 20 per cent of the water from the Indus River System and the rest 80 per cent to Pakistan.

Several air defence systems of Pakistan were also destroyed by Indian fighter jets, including the one in Lahore. Rafale, Sukhoi, and Mirage were included in the Indian fighter planes that destroyed terror camps in Pakistan and PoK. Pakistan retaliated and attempted to attack Indian military bases in 15 places in the northern and western regions. Islamabad also tried to attack military bases with its suicide drones and fighter jets on Thursday night. All these attacks were successfully thwarted by the Indian defence system. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited always stands behind these fighter planes and is always ready for any kind of operation.

HAL not only makes fighter planes for the Indian Army, but also makes parts crucial for their maintenance, repair. Apart from this, the company also sells fighter planes and defence equipment to other countries.

Who started HAL?

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited was established by Walchand Hirachand Doshi before independence. Walchand was a big businessman of the country at that time. Born in 1891, Walchand’s family was involved in clothing and shipbuilding, but he was interested in the aircraft business. In the year 1940, he laid the foundation of Hindustan Aircraft Works in Bangalore, India’s first aircraft manufacturing industry.

Government Bought The Stake

Initially, Hindustan Aircraft Works used to repair foreign aircraft, but Walchand wanted to do something different. He wanted India to make its own aircraft. After independence in 1947, the management of the company was handed over to the Government of India. following the development, the name of the company was changed to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).

Build Aircraft For Air Force

Following its acquisition by the government, the company began producing trainer, transport, and fighter aircraft. Its first product, a basic trainer aircraft delivered to the Air Force in 1963, significantly contributed to Indian pilot training.

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited is a major aerospace and defence company involved in the design, manufacture, and maintenance of various military aircraft and engines. Its work includes fighter jets, helicopters, jet engines, marine gas turbines, avionics, and spare parts, including the overhaul of Indian military aircraft. Notable projects include the Tejas fighter jet and the Sukhoi, developed in collaboration with Russia.

Listed on Stock Market

HAL, a government-owned company, is listed in the stock market. Today, it is among the big players in the defence sector. Currently, the government owns 71.65 percent stake in the company. About two years ago, the government reduced its 3.5 percent stake in the company.

A company with a market capitalisation of Rs 295,561.77 crore witnessed its share price close at Rs 4419.45 on Thursday, a 1.13 percent decrease. Despite this recent dip, the stock has historically yielded significant returns for investors, exceeding 1500 percent over the past five years.

Fact Check: Are ATMs closed In India for two days due to ransomeware cyber attack? Here’s the TRUTH https://www.india.com/news/india/fact-check-are-atms-closed-for-two-days-due-to-ransomeware-cyber-attack-heres-the-truth-7809756/ Fri, 09 May 2025 07:54:51 +0000 https://www.india.com/?p=7809756 Amid rising tensions between India and Pakistan following India’s precision strikes on terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, fake news and misinformation are being spread with the sole aim of creating panic and fear among the Indian public. One such claim gaining traction is a viral WhatsApp message falsely stating that ATMs will be closed for 2–3 days.

However, the Fact Check Unit of the Press Information Bureau (PIB) has debunked this fake news that was being circulated by several social media users. PIB has confirmed that there is no such directive and that ATMs will continue to operate as usual.

In a post on X(previously Twitter), PIB wrote,” Are ATMs closed⁉ A viral #WhatsApp message claims ATMs will be closed for 2–3 days.🛑 This Message is FAKE✅ ATMs will continue to operate as usual ❌ Don’t share unverified messages.”

Following the fact-check, the State Bank of India issued a statement confirming that all its ATMs, Cash Deposit Machines (CDMs), Automated Teller Machines (ADWMs), and digital services are fully operational and available for public use. The bank has also issued toll free number for its customers.

“All our ATMs, CDMs/ADWMs and digital services are fully operational and available for public use. Please do not rely on unverified information. For any queries, kindly reach out to your nearest branch or contact us on our toll-free numbers: 1800 1234, 1800 2100, 1800 11 2211, 1800 425 3800,” SBI stated.

Similar messages have been posted by Bank of Baroda, Punjab and Sindh Bank, Canara Bank and Bank of India. “All our digital services too are operating smoothly, ensuring a seamless banking experience from the comfort of your home,” Punjab National Bank said in a post on social media platform ‘X’.

Meanwhile, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will hold a review meeting on cybersecurity preparedness of banks and financial institutions in the evening, the ministry said, PTI reported.

The PIB’s fact-checking unit, early Friday morning, debunked a widely circulating video on social media claiming to show Pakistani attacks on Hazira Port in Gujarat and a drone attack in Jalandhar. The PIB said the Hazira Port video is an unrelated video “confirmed to depict an oil tanker explosion”. The footage captures an oil tanker explosion that occurred on July 7, 2021, and Pakistan is falsely propagating it as its attack on the port. PIB has even urged citizens not to share unverified messages.

The company stated that there is no need for panic buying, as fuel and LPG supplies remain readily available at all its outlets.

The company further urged customers to remain calm and avoid rushing to fuel stations unnecessarily. It said that such actions could disturb the supply chain and lead to avoidable chaos.

In a social media post, Indian Oil stated, “#IndianOil has ample fuel stocks across the country and our supply lines are operating smoothly. There is no need for panic buying–fuel and LPG is readily available at all our outlets.”

Indian Oil added, “Help us serve you better by staying calm and avoiding unnecessary rush. This will keep our supply lines running seamlessly and ensure uninterrupted fuel access for all.”

India and Pakistan have been actively at loggerheads after terrorist camps were destroyed by India at nine locations in Pakistan and Pakistan Occupied Kashmir under Operation Sindoor, which was launched in response to the ghastly Pahalgam terrorist attack.

Pakistan too resorted to firing on Thursday night across the Line of Control (LoC) on civilians and Indian Army installations in Uri, Kupwara, Tangdhar, and Karnah sectors of Jammu and Kashmir, violating the ceasefire.

Indian army has successfully neutralised the attacks. Explosions were heard as Indian air defence intercepted Pakistani drones in Udhampur, Jammu and Kashmir.

Can Pakistan use highly advanced F-16 against India? If it does than US will… https://www.india.com/news/india/can-pakistan-use-highly-advanced-f-16-against-india-if-it-does-than-us-will-7809278/ Fri, 09 May 2025 05:15:36 +0000 https://www.india.com/?p=7809278 India Pakistan war: With the commencement of Operation Sindoor by the Indian Armed Forces in response to the Pahalgam terrorist attacks, India has destroyed almost the entire terror infrastructure across the Line of Control (LoC) and the International Border. Pakistan retaliated by shelling across the LoC killing many civilians and injuring many. Pakistan also used drones and missiles across Jammu, Punjab, Rajasthan and Gujarat but they were intercepted by India.

Reports also suggest that two of Pakistan’s highly celebrated JF-17 jets were shot down by India adding that Islamabad may have deployed its American F-16 fighter jets.

This begs the question: Can Pakistan use America supplied F-16 fighter jets against India?

The entire fleet of Pakistan’s F-16s has come from the United States, which has placed strict conditions on how these aircraft can be used. These fighter jets were sold under the US Foreign Military Sales (FMS) programme. Every such sale comes with an End-Use Monitoring (EUM) agreement, meaning Pakistan cannot freely use or modify the jets without approval, reports WION.

There are also embedded US teams on the ground in Pakistan, part of programmes like Golden Sentry and Blue Lantern, whose job is to ensure American technology is not misused. These teams monitor the deployment of jets and weapons around the clock, says the report further.

Hence, as per the arrangements between the USA and Pakistan, the latter is prohibited from using F-16s in conventional warfare unless approved by the US administration. Moreover, these F-16s have been given to Pakistan on the condition that they will be used only in counterterrorism missions and not in direct state-to-state conflict.

Hence, it is to be understood that these fighter jets are not meant to be used against India in war-like situations.

To recall, US officials had accused Pakistan of breaking its F-16 agreement following the 2019 Balakot air strikes when Pakistan attacked a few sites inside India using these aircraft.

If Pakistan does not adhere to the agreement rules and misuses the F-16s again, America reserves the right to cut off support or suspend agreements.

Amid India-Pakistan war Jammu and Kashmir opens two gates of Baglihar Hydroelectric Power Project Dam after… https://www.india.com/news/india/amid-india-pakistan-war-jammu-and-kashmir-opens-two-gates-of-baglihar-hydroelectric-power-project-dam-after-7809232/ Fri, 09 May 2025 04:20:11 +0000 https://www.india.com/?p=7809232 The gates of the Baglihar Hydroelectric Power Project Dam on the Chenab River in Ramban have been opened.

The release of water follows heavy rainfall in Jammu and Kashmir, which has also raised concerns about potential flooding in the region. ANI citing officials reported that several vehicles were stranded on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway due to a landslide in Chamba.

Earlier on May 6, all gates of the Baglihar Hydroelectric Power Project Dam were closed, even as a limited volume of water continues to flow downstream after India suspended the 1960 Indus Water Treaty post Pahalgam terror attack.

This comes days after India announced it would hold the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance, following the terror attack in Pahalgam that left 26 people dead.

The Baglihar Dam, a key hydroelectric power project on the Chenab River, has been at the centre of past disputes between India and Pakistan under the Indus Waters Treaty framework.

The move gained strong support from the residents of Jammu and Kashmir. They have condemned Pakistan’s actions, warning that continued provocation could lead to war and reiterating support for India’s recent measures.

In the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 23, India decided to hold the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960 in abeyance until Pakistan credibly and irrevocably abjures its support for cross-border terrorism and closes the integrated Attari Check Post.

Speaking to ANI on Thursday, Deputy Traffic Inspector (DTI) Udhampur, Javed Kataria, said, “A landslide happened in Chamba due to heavy rainfall in the region. That’s why the roads are completely blocked. The restoration work is going on under the supervision of senior officials…Hopefully, the road will be open again in 3-4 hours.”

In a post on X, the Fact Check Unit stated that an old image is being circulated with false claims of multiple explosions at the Jammu Air Force Base in India. Furthermore, it stated that the image is from the Kabul Airport blast in August 2021.

The Fact Check unit in a post on X shared, “Explosion at Jammu Air Force Base? Here’s the truth! Amid the escalated tensions between India and Pakistan in the aftermath of India’s precision strikes on terror camps across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, detrimental elements from Pakistan have been trying to deliberately sabotage the narrative from the ground reality by spreading misinformation with a sole objective to instil fear among the Indian masses.

Following India’s retaliation during Operation Sindoor against the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, intense misinformation campaigns were launched by Pakistan-based social media handles, which had been actively and successfully debunked by the Fact Check of the Press Information Bureau (PIB).

The PIB’s fact-check unit debunked seven instances between late Wednesday night and early Friday morning that showed the Pakistani side fabricating a narrative in their support.

The PIB Fact Check’s efforts in debunking fake news and busting myths have been crucial in maintaining public trust and countering attempts to destabilise the nation through misinformation during such times.

Fact Check: Has Hazira Port in Gujarat been attacked? PIB debunks viral video claim, says… https://www.india.com/news/india/fact-check-has-hazira-port-in-gujarat-been-attacked-pib-debunks-viral-video-claim-says-7809028/ Fri, 09 May 2025 02:15:33 +0000 https://www.india.com/?p=7809028 A widely circulated video on the social media platform X, allegedly showing an attack on Hazira Port in Gujarat, has been debunked by the Press Information Bureau (PIB). PIB confirmed that the footage is actually from July 7, 2021.

The official PIB Fact Check handle clarified that the viral video claiming an attack on Hazira Port in Gujarat is misleading. According to the statement, the footage actually shows an oil tanker explosion from July 7, 2021, and is unrelated to the current situation. Citizens were urged not to share the video.

In a post shared on X(previously Twitter), the official PIB Fact Check handle wrote, “This video is widely circulating on social media with a claim that Hazira Port in Gujarat has been attacked. This is an unrelated video confirmed to depict an oil tanker explosion. The video is dated July 7, 2021. Do not share this video.”

The video, which gained traction on social media after being reposted by several unauthenticated accounts, falsely claimed that Hazira Port in Gujarat had been attacked. However, the misleading content was promptly flagged by the Press Information Bureau’s (PIB) fact-checking team, which is actively monitoring online narratives related to the conflict.

As ‘Operation Sindoor’ continues to unfold further with Indian Air Force strikes against Pakistan’s air defence system, the PIB and the Indian Armed Forces continue to stress the importance of verified information. The public is being encouraged to report suspicious content to the relevant authorities.
