Electric and Hybrid vehicles are not new to the automotive Industry, especially with almost every leading automaker having their partaking in the segment in some way or the other. While hybrid vehicles have been successful in few niche markets, the fact still remains that India is not the one among them. Having said that, industry experts speculate that the country’s leading car maker Maruti Suzuki India plans to launch its Swift Hybrid Range Extender in the Indian market in order to change that trend. Our only question is, are hybrid cars truly a viable choice for the Indian consumer?

Homegrown auto major Mahindra & Mahindra plans to launch its electric car in Europe in next six months as it looks to tap rising demand for eco-friendly vehicles in the continent. "The way electric vehicle technology is growing in Europe, we expect it to play an important role there. We are also looking at the opportunity to launch our electric vehicle there and expect to do so in next six months," Mahindra & Mahindra Chief Executive, Automotive Division, Pravin Shah told PTI.

Fearing closure of business, electric vehicle makers have sought government support in the Budget to give a boost to the sector saying the National Electric Mobility Mission Plan 2020 must be implemented at the earliest. "For us the roll out of NEMMP 2020 is of critical importance. If it doesn't happen in this Budget then it would be end of the road for the industry," Hero Electric CEO and Society of Manufacturers of Electric Vehicles (SMEV) Director-Corporate Affairs Sohinder Gill told PTI.
