The list of the top 20 polluted cities in the world is out, and India — the most populous country — has topped the list with 13 of the most polluted cities. The country’s booming economic growth is dependent on coal, and millions of people live in congested cities.
The other four cities are in Pakistan, and one in China and Kazakhstan, respectively. Notably, the city which is outside Asia featured on the list is N’Djamena, the capital of Chad in central Africa.
Notably, most of the cities in North America are polluted in California.
The IQAir report, produced by a Swiss organization monitoring worldwide air quality, focused on fine particulate matter, known as PM2.5, which is among the smallest yet most harmful pollutants. PM2.5 originates from various sources, including fossil fuel combustion, dust storms, and wildfires. Due to its minuscule size—measuring 1/20th the width of a human hair—it can bypass the body’s standard defenses and enter the lungs or bloodstream.
These particles cause inflammation and irritation and are also linked to respiratory diseases. Exposure to this pollutant can cause heart attacks and cancer.
As per the World Health Organization (WHO), the average yearly levels of PM2.5 must not exceed 5 micrograms per cubic meter.
Byrnihat, an industrial city located in northeastern India, reported a PM2.5 level of 128.2 last year, which exceeds the World Health Organization’s standard by over 25 times.
12 Additional Cities From India Are Included In The Top 20 List
Its capital New Delhi featured as the world’s most polluted capital for the sixth consecutive year, with a PM2.5 concentration of 91.8. The report also listed six satellite cities – Faridabad, Loni, Delhi, Gurugram, Noida and Greater Noida – making the list.
Once again, Delhi has become the world’s most polluted capital city for the sixth consecutive year. Every year in the month of November, throat-searing smog blankets the capital city of India. In the previous year also same smog settled over Delhi, disrupting flights and trains operations. The then Chief Minister also declared a “medical emergency.”
According to the report, India, which has a population of 1.4 billion, has fallen from third to fifth place in terms of pollution levels compared to the previous year. The report highlights that air pollution continues to be a major health issue, potentially decreasing life expectancy by approximately 5.2 years. Additionally, India’s neighboring countries, Bangladesh and Pakistan, which have a combined population of around 400 million, rank as the second and third most polluted countries in the world regarding PM2.5 particles.
China, on the other hand, which used to top the world’s worst air – witnessed a small improvement, as per the report.
Notably, Iran and Afghanistan did not mentioned in the report of this year because of the lack of data availability.
