When Amitabh Bachchan and his team used to leave the hotel for the unique shooting of the film, five tank convoys of the Afghan army used to go ahead of them and five behind them. One day, opposition leader Burhanuddin Rabbani sent a message to Amitabh that he was his big fan and he or any member of the film unit need not worry. No harm will be caused to anyone. Then one day, Burhanuddin Rabbani himself came to meet Amitabh Bachchan with flowers.

The film’s producer Manoj Desai had told in an interview to BBC that Amitabh Bachchan and the then Prime Minister of India, Rajiv Gandhi, were good friends, and it was he who had talked to the Afghan government for Amitabh Bachchan and his film unit. Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated in 1991, and the film was released in 1992.

Prior to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting ordering strict content restrictions, many social media handles of Pakistani celebrities were restricted access in Indian digital platforms. Many users reported that verified accounts of actors, singers, and social media influencers from Pakistan were restricted on Indian digital platforms, including YouTube, Instagram, and X.

Owning a lineage in the industry for decades, the Kapoor family has a powerhouse of talent who are associated with impressive storytelling.  From Prithviraj Kapoor’s theatrical gravitas to Ranbir Kapoor’s modern-day screen presence, generations of Kapoors have helped shape Indian cinema. But one name that stands out for his mix of charm, talent, and longevity is Rishi Kapoor.

Born into cinematic royalty, Rishi Kapoor grew up surrounded by film sets and storytelling. His journey in the industry began young, first as a child artist in Shree 420 (1955), and then playing a young Raj Kapoor in Mera Naam Joker (1970), a role that earned him a National Film Award. But it was his full-fledged debut as a romantic lead in Bobby (1973), directed by his father Raj Kapoor, that truly made him a star overnight. The film not only launched Rishi Kapoor’s career as a leading man but also set the template for youthful romance in Hindi cinema.

Raj Kapoor, known for his meticulous and demanding direction, was a perfectionist. He believed in capturing genuine emotion, even if it meant pushing his actors to uncomfortable places. A famous example of this is a scene from Prem Rog where Padmini Kolhapure’s character had to slap Rishi Kapoor’s character. Raj Kapoor insisted that the slap be real to maintain authenticity. What was supposed to be a single take turned into a physically demanding sequence, as technical issues forced them to reshoot the scene multiple times, resulting in Rishi Kapoor being slapped 7 to 8 times.

In an interview later, Padmini Kolhapure recalled the incident, revealing how uncomfortable she felt repeating the act, but followed Raj Kapoor’s instructions. Rishi Kapoor, on his part, took it in stride but jokingly vowed revenge.

Years later, when Rishi and Padmini reunited for the film Rahi Badal Gaye, the tables turned. This time, Rishi’s character had to slap Padmini’s. But instead of settling scores, he didn’t seek revenge. He delivered the scene in one take, without drawing it out, quietly letting go of the past.

Their partnership onscreen reflected this mutual respect. The two went on to act in multiple films together, including Zamaane Ko Dikhana Hai (1981), Yeh Ishq Nahi Aasaan (1984), Pyar Ke Kabil (1987), and Hawalaat (1987). But it was Prem Rog that became their career-defining collaboration. It was the second-highest-grossing film of 1982, and remains a significant film in both their careers, not just for its success, but for the behind-the-scenes story of two actors which still make us chuckle today.

Got married at a young age

Along with the film work front, the actress’s personal life has also been in the headlines. Moushumi started acting at just 10 with the Bengali film Balika Vadhu. The actress wanted to complete her studies before marriage, but she was married to Jayant Mukherjee at the age of just 15. At the same time, Moushumi became a mother for the first time at the age of 17. She had a daughter, whom she named Payal. Moushumi became a mother for the second time after 8 years, and she again had a daughter, but there came a time when Moushumi herself used to pray for her daughter’s death.

Even after working with all such superstars for more than 35 years, Shekhar Suman has never provided a solo hit movie. None of his movies turned out to be successful and were regarded as flops at the box office. Even though Shekhar Suman got a dream entry in Bollywood, what followed wasn’t as promising as we thought it would be.
But recently, Shekhar Suman did find redemption with the web series Heeramandi, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

In an interview, while recalling his previous work, Shekhar talks about shooting of low-budget film Manav Hatya with Madhuri Dixit, mentioning how he used to ride his scooter to pick her up for shoots and drop her back home. He expressed his disappointment over the payment he was offered for the film and shares, “Utsav was postponed, and between that and Anubhav, one day I received a call where a director wanted to sign me for a movie called Manav Hatya, where I had the role of a journalist. The director told me, there is hardly any money in this. He was offering me Rs 5000. But I signed Utsav for Rs 25000 and received a signing amount of Rs 10000. But when he gave me Rs 5000, I was very disappointed, and he said that there is no big heroine too. He informed me that there is a new heroine by the name of Madhuri Dixit. I requested him to introduce me to her, and then he asked me if I would do it, so I agreed to do the film.”

Shekhar Suman’s journey hasn’t been a smooth ride, experiencing both professional highs and lows, mirrored by the profound personal loss of his 11-year-old son to a heart condition in April 1995. While Bollywood stardom remained somewhat elusive, television became his forte, with popular shows like Dekha Bhai Dekh and Movers and Shakers bringing him significant recognition. Now, Shekhar is aiming for a career resurgence with his role in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s web series, Heeramandi, which is currently garnering public attention.

In spite of all the hurdles, Shekhar Suman is a very active figure in the film industry today and is successful and respected in every sphere of life.

Meanwhile, most of the Indians were a part of mock drills that took place in several cities across India on Wednesday (May 7) as part of a nationwide civil defence exercise. It aims to assess India’s emergency response readiness amid rising tensions with Pakistan.

Mahesh was a famous face in the 90s. Fans knew him for his villainous roles across all the cinema including Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, and Malayalam. Mahesh Anand made his debut in 1984 with the film Karishma. In the coming years, he featured in various films, nonetheless, it was 1988 when Mahesh’s major breakthrough came when he featured in Amitabh Bachchan’s Shahenshah. Though he played the role of a local goon who fought with Bachchan in the film, it brought Mahesh widespread attention.

While Mahesh’s professional life was discussed in the industry, it was his personal life that was under public scrutiny. Would you believe if we say that the actor married five times and none of his marriages sustained? Yes, you read that right! The actor tied the knot five times. He first married Reena Roy’s sister Barkha Roy, then Erica Maria D’Souza, Madhu Malhotra, Usha Bachani, and finally a Russian woman named Lana.

However, none of these marriages sustained. He had a son named Trishul Anand, who cut all ties with him. During his last days, Mahesh shared some concerning posts on his Facebook, when he wrote, “My friends and everyone call me an alcoholic. I have no family. My stepbrother has cheated me of Rs 6 crores. I have done more than 300 films, but I don’t even have money to buy drinking water. I don’t have a single friend in this world.”

In another post for his son Trishul, Mahesh wrote, “My son Trishul… God bless you, my son… Just hug me before I die. Love you for life.” He shared another post where he wrote, “I cry seeing this all day/night…..I love you my son Trishul. I’m your real papa. I know they changed your name to Anthony Vohra….. Please hug me once before I die, love you.”

Days later, the news of Mahesh’s death broke in. As per reports, when Mahesh’s maid kept ringing his doorbell and no response came, she immediately called Mahesh’s sister who later informed the police. When police broke in, they found Mahesh’s body on a sofa, with a bottle of alcohol and a plate of food next to him on the table.

But the true showstopper of her ensemble was the stunning diamond necklace draped over her neckline — a piece that was the subject of much conversation.

The necklace was not merely an accessory; it paid homage to Indian history. The style was inspired by the legendary Toussaint necklace, originally designed by Cartier for Maharaja Ranjitsinhji of Nawanagar, one of India’s most fashionable royals. His initial necklace was set with exotic gems: a 135-carat Queen of Holland diamond, a 26-carat blue diamond, and a 12-carat green diamond, which amounted to nearly 500 carats in total. Lost after his death, Cartier recreated the design years later from old photographs in its archives and christened it the “Toussaint Necklace.”

Isha’s necklace is owned by her mother, Nita Ambani, and is part of her personal collection. That same piece was used in the Hollywood movie Ocean’s 8, with Anne Hathaway wearing it. For the Met Gala, it was not only an accessory but also an homage — an ode to India’s rich history, royal fashion, and artistic heritage.

Isha’s appearance took more than 20,000 hours to finish, according to reports, and she completed it with a few layered neckpieces that accentuated the opulence of her outfit. Each aspect — ranging from apparel to accessories — reflected how contemporary India was embracing its royal heritage on an international platform.

For many, the name Niggo aka Nargis Begum does not ring a bell, whereas for others who have a keen interest in history and have studied deeply about Heeramandi, knew who Niggo was.

Niggo was born in Lahore, Pakistan. During that time, women belonging to Lahore were often the first choice of filmmakers for their movies. Women who knew how to dance joined the industry. Called Lollywood, the industry began pre-partition but after 1947 became a dominant film industry, producing films in Punjabi and Urdu. At that time, it was a common trend among filmmakers to bring in tawaifs from Heera Mandi and cast them as lead actresses in their films.

Niggo also came from the lanes of Heeramandi. Her mother was a courtesan and she used to do Mujra. Initially, Niggo also followed in the footsteps of her mother. However, during one of her performances, she was noticed by a film producer who gave her a chance to become an actress.

After this, Niggo’s career reached its peak, and she fell in love with film producer Khawaja Mazhar. The two eventually got married. However, it was Niggo’s mother who did not approve of this relationship, as tawaifs getting married was frowned upon.

In order to save her daughter from being with the person she got married to, Niggo’s mother faked illness and got her back to Heeramandi. Later, she brainwashed her to stay in the same place. On the other hand, it was Niggo’s husband Mazhar who wanted her to come back. But due to family pressure, Niggo refused to do so.

On January 5, 1972, Niggo’s husband reached Heera Mandi at her kotha. While trying to persuade her to return home with him, Niggo refused, which enraged him. In a fit of anger, he opened fire, killing Niggo. Her uncle, a musician, was also killed in the attack.
