Pakistan Train Hijack Highlights: In a significant escalation of the separatist conflict in Pakistan, militants in Balochistan attacked a Peshawar-bound train on Tuesday, initially taking around 450 passengers hostage, including women and children. While the civilians were later released, the attackers held 214 people captive, including military personnel. In a statement, the BLA claimed responsibility for the attack, stating that they had taken hostages, including personnel from the Pakistani military, police, and ISI. The group warned that any military intervention would lead to the execution of all hostages. Women, children, and Baloch passengers were reportedly released. The Balochistan government has imposed emergency measures, with security forces being deployed to the region. Government spokesperson Shahid Rind confirmed reports of intense firing between Pehro Kunri and Gadalar. The Jaffar Express, carrying around 400 passengers in nine bogies, was ambushed as it passed through a mountainous region with multiple tunnels. Militants opened fire, injuring the driver, and later used explosives to blow up the railway track on Tunnel No. 8, causing the train to derail.

As of the recent update, all passengers have been freed and all terrorist have been killed.

    Pakistan security said on Wednesday they had freed 155 hostages from around 450 passengers while killing 27 militants as a Pakistan train siege in restive Balochistan province entered a second day, news agency AFP reported citing sources.

    “Security forces have safely rescued 155 passengers… 27 terrorists have been eliminated,” a security source said, adding the operation was still “ongoing”.

    Driver of the Jaffar Express was badly wounded

    The train was trapped in a tunnel and the driver was badly wounded, local authorities, police and railway officials said. “Around 350 passengers, including women and children are save and a relief train will be reaching the area where the train was attacked,” said a district senior police officer, Rana Dilawar.
