In the 1990s, a Bollywood actress ruled the hearts of many. She shared the screen with several A-list actors of her time, including Rishi Kapoor, Rajesh Khanna, Shatrughan Sinha, Jackie Shroff, Mithun Chakraborty, Sunny Deol, Anil Kapoor, Govinda, and more. During her prime, this actress gave tough competition to Sridevi, Jaya Prada, and others. If you are wondering who we are talking about, then let us tell you that the actress in discussion is the very beautiful Meenakshi Seshadri.
Meenakshi was regarded as one of the most successful and highest-paid actresses in India during her time. She made her Bollywood debut in 1983 with the film Painter Babu. While the movie performed decently at the box office, Meenakshi gained recognition from her second film, Hero, released in the same year. Meenakshi’s hit film also include movies with Sunny Deol.
She became one of the leading actresses in Bollywood during the 1980s and 1990s, known for films like Damini, Hero, and Ghatak. Apart from being a top actress, Meenakshi is also a trained dancer in Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, Kathak, and Odissi.
Do you know that Meenakshi dropped out of a film after she rejected a proposal for marriage from the director? Yes, you read that right! Meenakshi was cast for Damini, opposite Rishi Kapoor. The movie was helmed by Rajkumar Santoshi. However, as the film begins, Santoshi proposes marriage to the actress, and she bluntly refuses. What happened next stunned Bollywood when Santoshi decided to drop Meenakshi from the film.
Speaking to Zoom, Meenakshi said, “Santoshi ji and I decided not to talk about it. It is water under the bridge. But the courage to stand up was important because nobody should be told they aren’t required anymore. It had several implications for rules in the workforce and beyond. I dealt with it by keeping quiet. I just said that I would choose not to comment on this as it is below my dignity to turn this into a fight. This is not a fight.”
However, did you know that Meenakshi left Bollywood at the peak of her career? She began her acting journey in 1983, and her last film was in 1996. She worked for only 13 years before deciding to move to the US.
While Meenakshi gave tough competition to many actors and actresses, there was one actress she reportedly did not want to work with. According to reports, Meenakshi never wanted to share the screen with Madhuri Dixit.
As per a report, Meenakshi Seshadri was offered the second lead role in the film Shanakht, while Madhuri Dixit was cast in the main lead. Meenakshi, who was accustomed to being offered lead roles in most films, was unhappy with this arrangement and declined to work on the movie.
