Russia-Ukraine war: Amid the controversy over the heated verbal spat between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and his deputy, Vice President JD Vance at a high-stakes White House meeting on Friday, Ukraine has achieved major success in the battlefield against Russia.

According to Russian defense blogger Fighterbomber, Russian frontline bombers are using modified UPMK bombs on Ukrainian targets, however, Russia has reportedly lost the ability to launch precision strikes using using glide bombs equipped with UMPK bomb kits as the bombs are often missing their intended targets.

As per the blogger, Ukraine is using portable, mobile electronic warfare stations that Kyiv has deployed on a mass scale along the line of contact, to block satellite navigation (SATNAV) systems needed for effectively guiding various weapons, including the Russian UMPK glide bombs, essentially rendering them ineffective.

“All satellite correction systems are officially out of the chat,” he declared.

Ukraine neutralizes Russia’s glide bombs

According to a Forbes report, Ukraine has successfully jammed the signals of Russian glide bombs, due to which Russian forces have not been achieve the same level of success with UPMK bombs on the frontlines. This was also confirmed by other sources, including Russian defence bloggers such as fighter bomber.

Ukraine’s success in neutralizing Russian UMPK bombs are a testament to how effective electronic countermeasures to advanced weapons can be in modern warfare.

What is UPMK?

The Unified Gliding and Correction Module (UMPK) is a bomb kit designed to convert unguided aerial bombs into precision-guided glide weapons, and works similar to the US’ Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) system.

The UPMK connects to bombs like FAB-250, FAB-500, FAB-1500 and FAB-3000, and extends their range and makes them even more effective on the battlefield. The UMPK kit was first introduced by Russia in the Russia-Ukraine war in March 2023 with the FAB-500M62 bomb.

The This kit allows fighter jets like Su-34, Su-35 and Su-30SM to carry out precision attacks from medium altitudes, taking out targets from a distance of about 70 kilometers, due to which Ukrainian air defense systems are unable to track Russian warplanes.

Setback for Russian forces?

According to experts, the neutralization of UPMK bombs is a major setback for Moscow in the Russia-Ukraine war, however, the Russian forces have a wide-range of munitions at their disposal, to offset this complication.

On Friday, a message was posted on the Two Majors Telegram channel about Russia using FAB bombs equipped with UMPK in Kursk sector, noting that “enemy satellites are being unable to completely stop the bombs.” The development shows that Ukraine is still struggling to completely neutralize SATNAV signals or spoofing precision-guided munitions (PGMs) by feeding them false information about targets.
