India boasts several stunning expressways, each remarkable for its unique features—some are the longest, while others have the widest lanes or higher speed limits. However, there’s one expressway in the country that is so special that it surpasses even the iconic Burj Khalifa in Dubai and the Eiffel Tower in Paris in terms of its design and structure.
The smallest expressway in India, as well as the country’s first urban expressway, is the Dwarka Expressway, connecting Delhi and Gurugram. Not only is it the first elevated expressway in the nation, resembling a flyover with cars traveling above the ground, but it also boasts a single-pillar design with 8 lanes on each side. This expressway spans a 23-kilometer elevated portion and 4 kilometers through a tunnel, meaning vehicles will only travel through the flyover and tunnel sections.
Stretching a total of 29 kilometers, the Dwarka Expressway runs 18.9 kilometers through Gurugram and the remaining 10.1 kilometers in Delhi. One of the unique features of the expressway is a section where it becomes four levels high—referred to as the Multi-Utility Corridor. This area, located near Gurugram’s Sector 82, includes an underpass on the bottom, a service lane above it, and a flyover on top, with the expressway running at the highest level.
The expressway also features the widest toll booths ever constructed in India, with 34 toll booths in total, the highest number for any expressway in the country.
For a one-way trip, the toll charges are as follows:
For a round trip:
The Dwarka Expressway’s construction involved an impressive use of materials. It required 2 lakh metric tons of steel, which is 30 times more than what was used in the construction of the Eiffel Tower. Additionally, a whopping 20 lakh cubic meters of concrete were used, six times the amount used for building the Burj Khalifa.
In terms of infrastructure, the Dwarka Expressway is a marvel that not only connects major cities but also stands as a monumental achievement in India’s road development.
