WhatsApp down! Users in India, other countries unable to send, receive messages, second outage in four months; check latest update

As per Downdetector, 90 percent of users who complained about WhatsApp outage, are facing issues in sending messages, 8 percent said the upload feature was broken, while 3 percent reported issues with sending voice messages on the platform.

WhatsApp outage: WhatsApp is reportedly facing a prolonged outage for millions of users in India and across the world. According to Downdetector, a large number of WhatsApp users in India and other countries have reported that they are unable to send or receive messages on the popular messaging app, especially in groups.

Users have reported issues with several features of WhatsApp, including sending messages in groups, since 5 PM (IST) on Saturday, with the maximum number of complaints, 2,880, registered at 8:15 PM. As per Downdetector, 90 percent of users who complained about WhatsApp outage, are facing issues in sending messages, 8 percent said the upload feature was broken, while 3 percent reported issues with sending voice messages on the platform.

This is the second major outage WhatsApp users have faced in the last four months, earlier, on December 11, 2024, all apps on the Meta platform, including Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp and Threads, were down worldwide for nearly 3 hours.

UPI down across India

Meanwhile, the WhatsApp outage came hours after Unified Payments Interface (UPI) service was down across the country for nearly 3 hours on Saturday, with reports of payment failures received between 11:30 am to 1:00 pm. The issue persisted till around 3:00 pm in the after before the service returned to normal.

This is the third time in the last 20 days that the UPI service has faced issues.

Prolonged Meta outages

Notably, Meta platforms facing a major outage is not unheard of. In October 2021, Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp faced a 6-hour outage worldwide due to which Meta shares tanked 6% on that day.

On July 3, 2019, at 8 pm, Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram went down in many countries including India and the United States, and issue was fixed after nearly 9 and a half hours on the next day, making it one of the longest outages the platform has faced.
