New Delhi: Elon Musk, in his latest statement, said that his company, The Boring Company, could construct a transatlantic tunnel connecting New York City and London for USD 20 billion. The concept involves building a massive tunnel under the Atlantic Ocean. It will span over 3,000 miles (4,800 kilometers). Earlier, the project was seen as impractical since it involves enormous cost, technical challenges, and the engineering scale required. However, Musk’s innovative approach and advancements in technology have reignited global interest in this unprecedented infrastructure project.
It is important to note that the idea of a transatlantic tunnel is not new. The project has been a matter of fascination among engineers and futurists. Proposed designs typically envision a tunnel stretching beneath the Atlantic Ocean, facilitating high-speed rail travel between the United States and the United Kingdom.
Currently, a flight between London and New York takes approximately eight hours. A transatlantic tunnel, theoretically capable of reducing this travel time to under an hour, would be a revolutionary step in human transportation.
Earlier estimates pegged the cost of such a project at a staggering USD 19.8 trillion (around 15.5 trillion British pounds). For perspective, the Channel Tunnel—a 38-kilometer underwater link between England and France—took six years to build and cost USD 12 billion. A transatlantic tunnel would be on an entirely different scale, posing financial and engineering challenges so immense that many deem them nearly impossible to overcome.
The CEO of Tesla, Space X and The Boring Company is known for proposing bold and transformative projects. According to the reports, Musk has recently claimed that The Boring Company, could complete the transatlantic tunnel for USD 20 billion. Musk’s confidence stems from advancements in tunneling technology and his pioneering Hyperloop concept, which could revolutionize the way people travel across long distances.
At the center of Elon Musk’s proposal is the use of Hyperloop technology. This concept was first introduced by Musk himself in 2013. Hyperloop features pressurized pods moving through vacuum-sealed tunnels, effectively removing air resistance and allowing for speeds far exceeding those of conventional trains. Hyperloop systems could hit speeds over 3,000 miles per hour (around 4,800 kilometers per hour), potentially cutting the travel time between London and New York to just one hour.
