New Delhi: Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy on Friday issued an unconditional apology for his recent statement regarding the bail granted to Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader K Kavitha in the ongoing Delhi liquor policy case. The apology notably comes a day after the Supreme Court’s intervention, during which it reprimanded Reddy for his remarks about a ‘deal’ between the BJP and the BRS to secure bail for Kavitha.
The Telangana CM issued the apology, stating that his comments were “taken out of context”.
“I have the highest regard and full faith in the Indian Judiciary. I understand that certain press reports dated 29th August, 2024 containing comments attributed to me have given the impression that I am questioning the judicial wisdom of the Hon’ble court,” Reddy said in a post on X.
“I reiterate that I am a firm believer of the judicial process.I unconditionally express my regret for the statements reflected in the press reports.
“The remarks attributed to me in such reports have been taken out of context. I have unconditional respect & highest regard for the Judiciary & its independence. As a firm believer in the Constitution of India and its ethos, I have and continue to hold the Judiciary in its highest esteem,” Reddy added.
Reddy aired his grievances about the disparity in the bail duration for several political feuds. He cited instances like BRS head K Kavitha securing bail in 5 months, AAP’s Manish Sisodia obtaining bail after a hulking 15 months and Delhi’s head honcho Arvind Kejriwal yet to receive the same for identical charges. Reddy even dropped hints insinuating a potential tie-up between the BRS party and BJP, suggesting this could be a reason for Kavitha’s swift bail process. This suspicion further fueled by the rumored role BRS played in BJP’s victory lap in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Reddy’s expressed opinion on Thursday was met with high disapproval by the Supreme Court. They referred to their recent warning to the additional chief secretary from Maharashtra as precedent, as he too faced reprimands for uttering comments deemed disrespectful.
Three esteemed judges, B R Gavai, Prashant Kumar Mishra, and K V Viswanathan, underscored the reluctance of the Supreme Court to meddle in the territory of the executive and legislature. They suggested that the same level of caution should be applied to judicial affairs as well. In relation to corruption and money laundering cases tied to the supposed Delhi excise policy fraud, Supreme Court has granted bail to BRS official K Kavita, enabling her to leave jail after five-long months.
