'Muslim Ganpati': Ganesh idol in Telangana sparks controversy; what’s the 'Bajirao Mastani' angle?

Secunderabad: Amid the ongoing Ganesh Chaturthi festival, a Ganpati idol in Telangana has become the center of controversy due to allegations of a ‘Muslim-like’ appearance. The idol was established in Secunderabad during the annual Ganpati festival. After receiving backlash, the organizers clarified that the pandal’s theme was inspired by the Bollywood film Bajirao Mastani, which led to the misunderstanding. The controversy began over the Ganpati idol’s attire, created by the Young Leo’s Youth Association, which took inspiration from the clothing worn by actor Ranveer Singh in Bajirao Mastani. However, the resemblance was not well-received by some groups and caused unrest.

‘Muslim Ganpati’: Online Outrage

The cyber uproar surged quickly, with several people pointing fingers at the planners for hurting their faith sentiments. On the other hand, a section of social media users painted the theme as a symbol of secularism. In the wake of these critiques, a coordinator stepped up to clear the mist around the theme’s essence, stating that the ultimate display didn’t mirror their initial concept.

“We didn’t deliberately choose a Bajirao Mastani theme. Unfortunately, the way things unfolded led to misunderstandings. Our goal was never to hurt anyone’s feelings,” stated a member of the organising committee.

‘Muslim Ganpati’: Artist Responsible For The Design

The organisers expressed their annoyance at the unfavourable comments on social media. They clarified that the confusion arose from insufficient dialogue with the artist responsible for the design.

Despite the surrounding controversy, the Young Leo’s Youth Association is determined to carry on with the planned celebrations in a peaceful manner. They are urging the community to genuinely comprehend their bona fide motives.

“We just want to move forward with our celebration of Ganpati Bappa. The execution wasn’t what we expected, but we don’t wish to escalate the situation,” the committee member said.
